PCB Prototyping and Mass Production: 5 Common Questions Answered

PCB Prototyping and Mass Production: 5 Common Questions Answered

Before requesting a PCB quotation, customers often have questions about manufacturing capabilities, prototype lead times, pricing, surface finishes and material options.

Clear technical information at the beginning of a project helps avoid engineering delays and makes it easier to move from PCB prototypes to volume production.

Here are five of the most common questions customers ask Shenzhen Yifang Electronics.

  1. What Is the Minimum PCB Trace Width and Spacing?

For conventional PCB production, Yifang Electronics commonly supports a minimum trace width and spacing of 4/4 mil, approximately 0.10/0.10 mm.

Designs with finer traces and spacing may also be evaluated, but their manufacturability depends on several factors:

• Copper thickness
• PCB layer count
• Finished board thickness
• Via and pad dimensions
• Base material
• Required production quantity
• Impedance control requirements

Finer traces require tighter process control and may increase manufacturing costs. Before production, our engineering team conducts a Design for Manufacturing review. If any feature is outside the recommended manufacturing range, we will provide an engineering query or suggest a suitable adjustment.

  1. How Long Does PCB Prototyping Take?

The typical production time for a conventional PCB prototype is approximately five to seven working days after all engineering questions and production files have been confirmed.

For eligible designs, expedited production can be evaluated, with the fastest lead time generally starting from approximately three working days.

The actual lead time depends on:

• Layer count
• PCB material
• Copper thickness
• Surface finish
• Special processes
• Testing requirements
• Order quantity
• Current production capacity

The production schedule begins after the Gerber files, specifications and engineering questions are fully confirmed. Shipping time is not included in the manufacturing lead time.

Customers with urgent projects should clearly state the required delivery date when requesting a quotation.

  1. Why Do PCB Quotations Vary Between Manufacturers?

Two PCBs that look similar may have very different manufacturing costs. A PCB quotation is affected by more than the board dimensions and quantity.

Important pricing factors include:

• Laminate brand and material grade
• Domestic or imported materials
• Number of layers
• Board thickness
• Copper weight
• Minimum trace width and spacing
• Hole size and hole density
• Surface finish
• Solder mask and silkscreen requirements
• Electrical testing method
• Special processes
• Order quantity and delivery schedule

For example, a 2 oz copper PCB costs more than a conventional 1 oz board. ENIG generally costs more than HASL, while high-TG, low-loss or special materials also increase the total price.

An unusually low quotation may be based on different materials, simplified inspection requirements or different quality standards. Therefore, customers should compare quotations using the same specifications instead of comparing only the final price.

Yifang Electronics prepares quotations according to the confirmed manufacturing requirements and quality standards of each project.

  1. Which PCB Surface Finishes Are Available?

Yifang Electronics supports several commonly used PCB surface finishes:

HASL

Hot Air Solder Leveling is widely used for conventional PCBs. It provides good solderability and is generally cost-effective. Both leaded and lead-free options may be available depending on the project requirements.

Lead-Free HASL

Lead-free HASL is suitable for projects that require RoHS-compliant manufacturing. It is commonly used in industrial equipment, consumer electronics and general electronic products.

ENIG

Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold provides a flat surface and good corrosion resistance. It is often selected for PCBs with fine-pitch components, BGA packages or longer storage requirements.

OSP

Organic Solderability Preservative offers a flat surface and good solderability at a competitive cost. However, its storage and handling conditions require additional attention.

Immersion Silver and Immersion Tin

These finishes provide a flat solderable surface and may be used for specific assembly or electrical performance requirements.

The correct surface finish depends on component type, assembly method, storage time, product application and budget. Our engineering team can recommend a suitable option after reviewing the PCB design.

  1. Can You Manufacture Multilayer and Special PCBs?

Yifang Electronics manufactures double-sided and multilayer PCBs, with capabilities of up to 20 layers depending on the design and technical requirements.

Available material and process options include:

• Standard FR-4
• High-TG materials
• Halogen-free materials
• Aluminum PCBs
• Copper-based PCBs
• Heavy-copper PCBs
• Rigid-flex PCBs
• High-frequency materials
• Impedance-controlled PCBs
• Castellated holes
• ENIG and lead-free HASL

Special materials and processes require an engineering review before quotation. Customers should provide complete Gerber files, stack-up requirements, material specifications and applicable technical standards.

What Information Is Required for a PCB Quotation?

For an accurate quotation, please provide:

• Gerber files
• Order quantity
• PCB layer count
• Board thickness
• Copper thickness
