Four Challenging PCB Projects We Manufactured

Four Challenging PCB Projects We Manufactured

Not every PCB is difficult for the same reason. Some require multiple lamination cycles, while others involve high-frequency materials, heavy copper or extremely small dimensions.

Here are four examples manufactured by Shenzhen Yifang Electronics.

1. 14-Layer RO4350B High-Frequency PCB

Board specifications:

  • 14 layers

  • RO4350B material

  • 2.5mm board thickness

  • ENIG 3μ"

The main challenge was controlling layer alignment and the lamination process across a 14-layer construction. RO4350B also requires different material handling and processing parameters from standard FR4.

Careful engineering review and production control were required to achieve the specified board thickness and finished surface.

2. 8-Layer 2+N+2 HDI PCB

Board specifications:

  • 8 layers

  • HDI 2+N+2 construction

  • 1.7mm board thickness

  • Resin-plugged vias

  • ENIG 1μ"

This board required sequential lamination, accurate microvia alignment and reliable resin plugging. Each production stage had to match the previous layer structure before the next lamination cycle could begin.

The completed board shows our ability to manufacture complex HDI structures for space-limited electronic designs.

3. 12-Layer Thick-Copper PCB

Board specifications:

  • 12 layers

  • FR4 TG170

  • 2.8mm board thickness

  • 3oz inner and outer copper

  • Castellated holes

  • ENIG surface finish

Combining a 2.8mm finished thickness with 3oz copper makes drilling, etching and lamination more demanding. The castellated edges also require controlled routing and plating to maintain a clean, usable connection surface.

This project combined three manufacturing challenges in one board: high layer count, heavy copper and plated half-holes.

4. Ultra-Small Medical PCB

Board specifications:

  • 4 layers

  • 0.5mm board thickness

  • 2.2 × 1.9mm finished size

  • 3/3mil line width and spacing

  • ENIG 1μ"

Although this is the smallest board in the group, it is one of the most demanding. Its miniature size and 3/3mil circuitry leave very little room for manufacturing variation.

Accurate imaging, registration and final profile control were essential throughout production.
