Electronics Supply Chains Are Tightening Again: How to Prepare Your PCB and PCBA Orders
The electronics supply chain is showing renewed signs of pressure in 2026. For companies preparing a new PCB prototype, pilot run or volume PCBA order, early planning is becoming increasingly important.
According to the Global Electronics Association’s August 2026 Global Sentiment Survey, 64% of electronics manufacturers reported limited availability or extended lead times for the components and materials they depend on. In addition, 53% said supplier lead times were longer in the second quarter of 2026 than in the first quarter.
The industry is not necessarily facing a full-scale crisis. However, these figures show that buyers should no longer assume that every component and PCB material will be immediately available. A delayed IC, passive component, laminate or resin can affect the schedule of an entire PCBA project.
Which Materials and Components Are Under Pressure?
The survey identified several sources of supply disruption rather than one single shortage.
Memory products and PCB laminates and resins were each cited by 16% of respondents. Microprocessors and GPUs followed at 14%, while passive components accounted for 11%.
The situation also differs by region. European manufacturers reported greater pressure from laminates and resins, while respondents in the Asia-Pacific region were more affected by passive-component availability.
For PCB and PCBA buyers, supply risks should therefore be evaluated at two levels:

PCB materials, including laminates, prepreg and copper-related materials

Electronic components, especially critical ICs and parts with limited approved alternatives
Even when PCB fabrication capacity is available, one unavailable component can prevent the assembled boards from being completed. Conversely, component stock alone cannot guarantee delivery if a project requires a special laminate, unusual board thickness or complex stack-up.
Five Ways to Reduce PCB and PCBA Delays
1. Send Complete Files as Early as Possible
A complete quotation package helps the manufacturer identify potential risks before production begins.
For a PCB project, buyers should normally provide:

Gerber files

Drill files
-
PCB specifications
-
Required quantity
-
Delivery requirements
For a PCBA project, the package should also include the BOM, pick-and-place data and assembly drawings when available.
Incomplete part numbers or missing manufacturer information can slow down component sourcing. A clear BOM should include the manufacturer, full part number, package, quantity per board and any approved alternatives.
2. Confirm Critical Components Before Starting Production
Components with long lead times should be checked before the PCB production schedule is finalized.
Critical components may include:

Microcontrollers

Memory devices
-
Power semiconductors

Sensors

Communication modules

Specialized connectors

Obsolete or end-of-life parts
When an exact component is unavailable, any proposed replacement must be technically reviewed. Package size alone is not enough. Electrical ratings, pin configuration, tolerance, temperature range and product lifecycle status must also be considered.
Any component substitution should be approved by the customer before assembly begins.
3. Allow Qualified Alternatives Where Appropriate
A BOM that permits approved equivalent components can provide more sourcing flexibility. However, alternatives should not be selected only because they are cheaper or available faster.
For general resistors and capacitors, replacements may be relatively straightforward when all specifications match. For ICs, communication modules, safety-related parts or precision components, engineering confirmation and functional testing may be required.
Marking acceptable alternatives directly in the BOM gives the sourcing and engineering teams clear instructions and reduces repeated communication.
4. Complete DFM and BOM Reviews Before Volume Production
A design-for-manufacturability review can identify PCB-related problems before production.
Common issues include:

Insufficient trace spacing

Unsuitable annular rings

Unclear stack-up requirements
-
Panelization problems
-
Incorrect hole sizes

Conflicts between the PCB design and assembly process
A BOM review can also identify incomplete descriptions, mismatched footprints, end-of-life parts and sourcing risks.
Resolving these issues before production is usually faster and less expensive than correcting them after the PCBs or components have arrived.
For new products, a prototype or small pilot run is recommended before mass production. This allows the customer and manufacturer to verify manufacturability, assembly quality and functional performance.
